As the importance of the body in the treatment and prevention of stress and trauma is becoming more recognised, a wide range of health professionals are integrating TRE into their practice including psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists, core energetic therapiss, social workers, doctors, physiotherapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, life coaches, pilates instructors, body workers and yoga teachers.
TRE can be taught to individual clients as part of their normal consultation, as a stand-alone workshop for groups of clients or easily integrated into exercise, pilates and yoga classes. It is an effective sports recovery tool and a powerful adjunct to support the effects of manual techniques and home exercise programs.
- “As a psychologist, I am so excited to have discovered TRE. Don’t be fooled by the simplicity of this process, it is deep and profound work. I am recommending it to my clients as a process that beautifully compliments other forms of treatment.”
Karin Hannigan, Psychologist, Brisbane
How does TRE enhance talk based therapies?
TRE allows for the integration and engagement of the body into talk based therapies to ensure the physiological fight, flight and freeze states underling many psycho-emotional conditions are concurrently addressed. People experiencing overwhelming states such as anxiety, depression and PTSD are taught to self regulate the release process to regain a sense of control of their body and widen their window of tolerance for various body based emotional states. Using TRE between sessions not only decreases base line states of stress and tension, but also can enhance the effectiveness of talk based treatments by allowing greater access to the neo-cortex once the body’s defensive physiology has been released.
How does TRE enhance body based therapy?
TRE regulates autonomic nervous system states often not addressed by manual forms of body work that underly and create defensive tension and chronic tightening in the body. Re-regulating the autonomic nervous system helps to maintain the effects of hands on treatments and minimise the return to defensive body states between sessions. While the tremors and movements invoked during TRE can’t be created by the conscious mind, they can be stopped at any time allowing for the safe and gentle self regulation of the process without the need for catharsis or specific emotional release.
Why haven’t we used these tremors before now?
Shaking and trembling has often been dismissed in western cultures as a sign of shock rather than understood as an innate genetically encoded process to return us to calm homeostasis following stressful and traumatic events. People experiencing shaking during exercise such as yoga and pilates tend to control the tremors rather than realising they provide a doorway to a deeper release and relaxation than available within the limits of our conscious control.
- This workshop was the perfect blend of science, human experience and practical work with the technique. Recommended – love to see it taught in schools!”

- “I’m passionate about people and healing people, so for me and all the things I’ve tried, this has been the most profound in terms of moving the energy out, or moving through the energy –it’s amazing. If I could pass that on to my clients, and they could release their trauma, and if they could actually take charge of their own body and their own emotions through this modality – how great is that?”
